George Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on February 22, 1732. He was the eldest son of Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary Bell Washington, who were prosperous Virginia gentry of English descent. Washington spent his early years on the family estate in Pope?s Creek along the Potomac River. He received most of his education at home; his early education included the study of mathematics, surveying, the classics, and the ?rules of civility?. Upon the death of his father in 1743, he moved to Mount Vernon with his half brother Lawrence, who became a substitute father to George.
